Challenge: Cheese

With Cheese

How I will remember my dad.

Cabinets
And refrigerator bare
Though filled to the brim.
Everything just slightly past its prime.
Ketchup can’t expire,
Just like that Cheez Whiz
Finally thrown out
With the divorce.
Cans of soup from before the war,
Crackers, candy and cookies,
At least three years old.
Freezer filled with cartons of homemade ice cream
Slightly frost bitten.
And bags of pesto cubes
Taking up space.

Nothing really seems edible.

Evidence of a man rarely home.

But when he does return,
Happy to see us,
Hugs, kisses, hellos,
He pulls out his latest find…
(From the only drawer in the fridge
Not housing over-ripened food)
Three expensive cheeses.
Mild, sharp, and stinky.
The first one is goat and sheep’s milk.
A non-stinky stinky cheese.
The second one is straight goat.
Sharp and tasty.
The last one…
Blue cheese from southern Spain,
Pungent…but sweet.

They are usually good.
And always dispensed
Just after hello.
Forget Elmo, Shakespeare,
The Magic Flute,
These are my cheeses.

Yeah.
That is how I will remember my dad,
With cheese.
